A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga depicting the immortal Kinko riding a giant carp through stylised waves.
This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga depicts the legendary Chinese immortal Kinko, also known as Qin Gao, riding a giant carp across turbulent waters. Shigenaga, a significant figure in the early development of Ukiyo-e, employs a distinct graphic style that balances narrative detail with the decorative conventions of the Edo period. The composition focuses on the figure of Kinko, who sits calmly upon the back of the fish while reading a scroll, a gesture that contrasts with the swirling, stylised waves surrounding them.
The print demonstrates the technical characteristics of early Japanese woodblock production, including the use of bold, calligraphic outlines and a limited colour palette. The artist uses hand-applied colour washes, a common practice for prints of this era before the full development of nishiki-e, or full-colour printing. The treatment of the water is particularly notable, with repetitive, rhythmic lines creating a sense of motion that frames the central subject. The inclusion of the dragon-like scales on the carp and the patterned robes of the immortal reflects the period's interest in mythological themes and the integration of Chinese folklore into Japanese visual culture.
Shigenaga was an influential teacher, and his work helped shape the aesthetic direction of the Ukiyo-e school. This piece captures the blend of fantasy and human activity typical of the genre, presenting a moment of quiet study amidst a chaotic environment. The print serves as an example of the early eighteenth-century approach to figure composition, where the subject is integrated into a highly structured, graphic environment. The work remains a clear representation of the technical and thematic concerns of the time, focusing on the clarity of line and the balance of the pictorial space.
