A striking 1794 woodblock portrait by Tōshūsai Sharaku, capturing the actor Sawamura Sojuro III with the artist's signature psychological intensity.
This woodblock print is a classic example of the ōkubi-e, or large-head portrait, produced by Tōshūsai Sharaku during his brief but intense career in 1794. The subject is the kabuki actor Sawamura Sojuro III, depicted in the role of Kujaku Saburo Narihira. Sharaku is known for his departure from the idealised portraits common in the ukiyo-e genre of the period. Instead, he employed a psychological realism that captured the specific facial features and expressions of the performers on the Edo stage.
The composition focuses on the upper torso and head of the actor, set against a mica-dusted background that provides a subtle, metallic sheen. The actor holds a lantern, which serves as a prop to ground the figure within the theatrical context. Sharaku uses bold, sweeping lines to define the contours of the face and the heavy, dramatic eyebrows. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted tones of plum, yellow, and grey, which allows the viewer to focus on the actor's intense, side-glancing expression.
Sharaku's work was often controversial among his contemporaries due to his refusal to soften the features of his subjects. This print demonstrates his ability to convey the tension of a theatrical performance through a static image. The print is a significant example of the artist's output during the fourth month of the Kansei era, when he produced a series of portraits of actors from the Miyako-za theatre. The precision of the woodblock carving and the application of colour reflect the high standards of the Edo print publishers of the late eighteenth century. This piece remains a primary reference for the study of kabuki iconography and the development of the actor portrait in Japanese art history.
