Description
Kirkby Stephen brings a square church tower and graceful stone bridge together over clear water, with green fellside beyond giving the town scene a composed Cumbrian character.
Pointed pinnacles and a round clock face break the pale masonry of the tall tower, set behind a line of leafy trees. In front, three high arches carry the bridge over rippled water and exposed river stones. A red-topped lamp stands on the parapet, while the far hillside is divided into soft green fields beneath broad cloud.
For residents of Kirkby Stephen, this view can recall the everyday crossing where town buildings give way to running water and the fells beyond. Visitors may recognise the pleasure of stopping at the bridge before continuing through the market town. The reflected arches keep the river at the centre of a place shaped by its valley setting.
