A dramatic lithograph by Henri Fantin-Latour depicting the sorcerer Klingsor summoning Kundry, inspired by Richard Wagner's opera, Parsifal.
This lithograph by Henri Fantin-Latour depicts a scene from Richard Wagner's opera, Parsifal. The composition captures the sorcerer Klingsor as he summons the figure of Kundry. Fantin-Latour, a French artist known for his technical mastery of lithography, frequently turned to musical themes for his creative output. His work in this medium often utilised soft, atmospheric tonal gradations to create a sense of mystery and psychological tension.
In this print, the artist employs a dark, moody palette to define the figures. Klingsor sits to the left, his form partially obscured by shadow, while he gestures towards the ethereal, rising figure of Kundry. The contrast between the solid, seated sorcerer and the fluid, almost spectral appearance of the woman creates a dynamic visual narrative. The texture of the lithographic stone allows for a range of grey tones, which Fantin-Latour uses to suggest the supernatural nature of the conjuring act. The focus remains on the interaction between the two characters, with the surrounding space left largely undefined to heighten the dramatic effect.
Fantin-Latour produced a significant body of work inspired by Wagnerian operas, reflecting the broader interest in Symbolist themes during the late nineteenth century. His approach to these subjects avoids literal storytelling in favour of capturing the emotional weight of the operatic moments. The print demonstrates his ability to translate complex musical narratives into static, visual form through the careful application of light and shadow. This piece is a representative example of his later career, where he moved away from his earlier realist still-life paintings to explore more imaginative and literary subjects.
