Wassily Kandinsky's 'Kochel, Gabriele Münter Painting' from 1902 depicts his partner in an abstracted outdoor setting, showcasing his early Expressionist style with bold brushwork and vibrant colours.
Painted in 1902, Wassily Kandinsky's 'Kochel, Gabriele Münter Painting' captures his partner, Gabriele Münter, seated within a vibrant, abstracted setting. Kandinsky, a Russian painter and art theorist, is credited with painting one of the first recognised pieces of abstract art. He was a founder of the influential group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), formed in 1911, which explored spirituality and symbolism through colour and form. This portrait exemplifies Kandinsky's early Expressionist style, before his complete abstraction. Münter is depicted outdoors, possibly in the Bavarian Alps near Kochel, a location they frequented. The brushwork is thick and textured, with bold strokes of green and blue defining the hillside and sky. Münter herself is rendered with less detail, her form suggested by blocks of colour. The painting conveys a sense of atmosphere and emotion, characteristic of the Expressionist movement, rather than a precise representation of reality. The composition is structured around diagonal lines, creating a dynamic and somewhat unsettling effect.
