A detailed drawing by Dutch artist Willem Romeyn, depicting a herd of cattle resting before the Porta Sant'Angelo in Tivoli, Italy.
This drawing by Willem Romeyn captures a scene near the Porta Sant'Angelo in Tivoli, Italy. Romeyn, a Dutch painter active during the seventeenth century, belonged to a group of artists known as the Italianates. These painters travelled to Italy to study the light and the classical ruins, often incorporating these elements into their compositions upon returning to the Netherlands. The work demonstrates the artist's focus on pastoral life, featuring a herd of cattle resting and grazing in the foreground.
The architectural elements, specifically the fortified gate and the distant structures, provide a sense of place and historical context. Romeyn uses graphite and grey wash to create subtle tonal variations, defining the forms of the animals and the rugged terrain. The composition is balanced, with the cattle arranged in naturalistic poses that lead the eye across the foreground. The background remains lighter in tone, suggesting the atmospheric quality of the Italian countryside.
Romeyn's technique relies on precise line work to establish the structure of the buildings and the anatomy of the livestock. The application of wash adds depth to the shadows, particularly around the base of the gate and the shaded areas of the animals. This drawing reflects the typical interests of the Dutch Italianate school, which combined the observation of local Italian life with the conventions of Dutch genre painting. The work is a study in light and form, capturing a quiet moment in a setting that was popular among Northern European artists of the period. It remains a clear example of the technical proficiency and stylistic preferences of Romeyn, who was a pupil of Nicolaes Berchem.
