A winter scene by Floris Arntzenius depicting horse-drawn carriages and coachmen in the snow, rendered in watercolour and gouache.
Floris Arntzenius, a prominent figure associated with the later generation of the Hague School, frequently turned his attention to the urban atmosphere of The Hague. This work, titled Koetsen en koetsiers in de sneeuw, captures a quiet moment of daily life during the winter months. The composition focuses on a group of horse-drawn carriages waiting in the snow, a common sight in the city at the turn of the twentieth century. Arntzenius employs a restrained palette, dominated by cool greys, whites, and muted browns, to convey the damp, chilly conditions of a Dutch winter day.
The artist uses watercolour and gouache to build the scene, allowing the paper to provide the base for the snow-covered ground. The figures of the coachmen, dressed in heavy coats, stand in the foreground, their forms rendered with fluid, confident brushwork. The carriages, partially obscured by the atmospheric haze, provide a sense of depth and structure to the composition. Arntzenius avoids excessive detail, preferring to capture the mood and the fleeting quality of the light. His approach reflects the broader interest among Hague School artists in the effects of weather and light on urban environments. The work demonstrates his ability to observe the mundane aspects of city life and translate them into a composed, painterly image. By focusing on the interaction between the coachmen and their environment, Arntzenius provides a glimpse into the social fabric of the period, where such transport was a standard feature of the street scene. This piece remains a representative example of his skill in handling water-based media to depict the specific tonal qualities of the Dutch climate.
