A striking example of geometric abstraction by Otto Freundlich, featuring interlocking shapes in a balanced arrangement of deep tones and bold red accents.
Otto Freundlich was a significant figure in the development of European abstract art. His work often focused on the relationship between colour, form, and the spiritual dimensions of geometry. This piece, Komposition in Schwarz und Weiß, demonstrates his interest in the modular construction of the picture plane. Rather than relying on traditional perspective, Freundlich organises the surface into a series of interlocking geometric segments.
The composition is defined by a rhythmic arrangement of shapes, including squares, rectangles, and curved arcs. These forms appear to shift and rotate across the canvas, creating a sense of internal motion. The palette is dominated by deep, saturated tones of blue, green, and black, which provide a dark, atmospheric backdrop for the contrasting blocks of red. The application of paint is visible, with brushstrokes following the direction of the individual shapes, adding a tactile quality to the otherwise rigid geometry.
Freundlich was associated with the Abstraction-Création group in Paris, which sought to promote non-figurative art during the 1930s. His approach to painting was rooted in the belief that abstract forms could communicate universal truths. By breaking down the image into fundamental units, he invited the viewer to engage with the painting as a self-contained system of relationships. The interplay between the dark, muted areas and the bright red accents creates a visual tension that draws the eye across the entire surface. This work reflects the artist's pursuit of harmony through the precise balance of colour and structure, a pursuit that remained central to his practice throughout his career in France and Germany.
