A detailed 1831 engraving by Haatje Pieters Oosterhuis, presenting a formal calendar for 1832 within a classical architectural framework.
This engraving by Haatje Pieters Oosterhuis functions as a formal almanac for the year 1832. Produced in 1831, the work displays the rigid, architectural structure common to early nineteenth-century Dutch commemorative prints. The composition is organised into a classical facade, featuring columns that support an entablature inscribed with the names of notable Dutch historical figures, such as Erasmus and Grotius. This framing device creates a sense of order and institutional authority.
Within the architectural framework, the print incorporates several distinct visual elements. Three central vignettes depict military scenes, including the entry of the Prince of Orange into Amsterdam and the activities of the civic guard. These images are rendered with precise, fine lines typical of the period's engraving techniques. Below these scenes, the calendar is divided into months, with each column providing specific dates and religious or civic observances. The lower section contains detailed biographical information regarding the Dutch royal family, specifically King Willem-Frederik and his relations.
The aesthetic is defined by its symmetry and balance. Oosterhuis employs a monochromatic palette, relying on the contrast between the ink and the paper to define the depth of the columns and the clarity of the typography. The inclusion of the royal coat of arms at the top centre reinforces the political nature of the document. As a piece of ephemera, it captures the intersection of national identity, royal lineage, and the practical necessity of a calendar. The work demonstrates the technical skill required to combine complex textual information with illustrative vignettes, resulting in a cohesive visual record of the Dutch state during the early 1830s.
