Description

A stark 1922 woodcut by Otto Dix, offering a satirical critique of Weimar-era nationalism through sharp, angular forms and symbolic imagery.

This woodcut by Otto Dix, titled Konstellation, dates to 1922. It belongs to a period of intense social and political critique in Weimar Germany. Dix employs the stark, high-contrast medium of the woodcut to render a grotesque assembly of figures. The composition features a central male figure, often interpreted as a satirical representation of authority or the bourgeoisie, flanked by symbolic heads that evoke religious and political iconography.

The imagery includes a figure reminiscent of Christ, a masked or robotic head, and a weeping woman holding a document inscribed with the words 'Liebe!! Ordnung!! Vaterland!!'. These terms, translating to 'Love, Order, Fatherland', serve as a biting commentary on the nationalistic rhetoric prevalent in post-war Germany. The background is filled with geometric lines and mathematical symbols, suggesting a cold, calculated, or perhaps chaotic structure behind the social facade.

Dix was a central figure in the New Objectivity movement, which sought to depict the harsh realities of German society following the First World War. His work often focused on the moral decay and social stratification of the era. The sharp, angular lines and the aggressive carving style of the woodcut reflect the artist's desire to strip away sentimentality. By presenting these figures in a compressed, almost claustrophobic space, Dix forces the viewer to confront the absurdity and tension of the time. The print remains a direct, unvarnished record of the artist's reaction to the political climate of the early 1920s.
