The composition focuses on the male nude, a standard subject for students tasked with mastering anatomy, musculature, and the play of light across the human form. The figure is captured in a dynamic, contrapposto stance, holding a lance and shield, which provides a classical context for the exercise.

Alberti employs a controlled, chiaroscuro-influenced lighting scheme. The light source originates from the upper left, illuminating the back and shoulder of the warrior while casting the lower limbs and the reverse side of the shield into shadow. This technique emphasises the volume of the torso and the tension in the legs.
