Krishna and Balarama depart Vrindavan - Becharam Das Dutta

This work is a characteristic example of Kalighat painting, a style that emerged in the nineteenth century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. These works were produced by itinerant artists for pilgrims and visitors, often featuring bold outlines and flat areas of colour. The medium typically involved watercolour on mill-made paper, reflecting the rapid production methods required to meet the demand of the urban market.

The scene depicts the departure of Krishna and Balarama from Vrindavan, a narrative moment from the Bhagavata Purana. The two figures stand atop a chariot, their forms rendered with the distinct iconography associated with these deities. Krishna is shown with his traditional blue skin, while Balarama stands beside him. The composition is structured to convey movement, with the chariot pulled by a horse, while the figures of the gopis are arranged to the right. One woman is shown prostrate on the ground, expressing the sorrow of separation, a common emotional motif in these devotional narratives.

Becharam Das Dutta was one of the known practitioners of this school. His work displays the typical economy of line and simplified anatomical forms that define the Kalighat aesthetic. The figures are framed by architectural elements, such as the temple-like structure of the chariot, which provides a sense of place. The palette is limited to primary and secondary colours, applied with a directness that prioritises narrative clarity over realistic shading or perspective. This print captures the intersection of traditional religious subject matter and the changing social environment of colonial-era Bengal, where mass-produced art became accessible to a wider public.
