A traditional devotional painting from the Tirupati School, depicting Krishna as the king of the cowherds with gold leaf accents.
This work originates from the Tirupati School of South India, a tradition known for its production of devotional icons for pilgrims visiting the Venkateswara Temple. The image depicts Krishna in his form as Rajagopalaswamy, the king of the cowherds. He stands in a characteristic tribhanga pose, his weight shifted to one side, which provides a sense of rhythmic movement to the figure. In his hands, he holds a lotus flower and a staff, symbols associated with his pastoral divinity.
The aesthetic of the Tirupati School is defined by a bold use of colour and a focus on heavy ornamentation. The figure of Krishna is rendered in a warm, terracotta tone, which contrasts with the gold leaf applied to his jewellery, crown, and garments. The artist employs fine, precise lines to delineate the patterns on his dhoti and the elaborate necklaces adorning his chest. A smaller attendant figure stands to his right, mirroring the posture and attire of the deity on a reduced scale. This hierarchical arrangement is common in South Indian religious art, where the primary deity is given greater physical presence.
The background is framed by an architectural arch, a common device in Indian miniature painting to suggest a sacred space. The use of gold leaf, applied to the jewellery and decorative elements, reflects the opulence associated with temple art of the period. The paper support, likely handmade, provides a textured surface that has aged to a soft, neutral tone. This print captures the specific iconographic conventions of the region, where the focus remains on the clarity of the deity's form and the symbolic weight of his attributes. The composition is balanced and symmetrical, designed to facilitate meditation and devotion for the viewer.
