A masterful seventeenth-century engraving by Paulus Pontius, depicting the Carrying of the Cross after a composition by Peter Paul Rubens.
This engraving by Paulus Pontius depicts the Carrying of the Cross, a subject derived from the compositions of Peter Paul Rubens. Pontius, a master of the burin, worked closely with Rubens to translate the painterly qualities of the Flemish Baroque into the precise, linear language of printmaking. The composition is dense with figures, capturing the chaotic movement of the procession toward Calvary.
In the foreground, Christ is shown under the weight of the cross, his form rendered with muscular tension. To his right, the Virgin Mary and other figures express grief, their postures echoing the emotional weight of the scene. The background features soldiers on horseback and a crowd, their forms partially obscured by the atmospheric treatment of the landscape. Pontius employs a sophisticated system of cross-hatching and varied line weights to suggest the texture of fabric, the sheen of armour, and the play of light across the figures. This technical approach allows for a sense of volume and depth that mirrors the dramatic lighting characteristic of Rubens's own canvases.
The print demonstrates the collaborative nature of the Antwerp print industry during the seventeenth century, where skilled engravers were essential for the dissemination of major artistic ideas. Pontius manages to maintain the energy of the original design while adapting it to the constraints of the copper plate. The result is a work that balances narrative clarity with the technical virtuosity expected of a master engraver of his era. The composition remains a study in the movement and emotional intensity that defined the Baroque period in Northern Europe.
