A refined ukiyo-e woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi, depicting a woman at her mirror with a classical poetic reference.
This woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi belongs to the series The New Six Immortal Poets. Eishi, a former painter in the service of the Tokugawa shogunate, transitioned to printmaking during the late eighteenth century. His work is recognised for its elongated figures and refined aesthetic, which departed from the more robust styles of his contemporaries.
The composition features a woman adjusting her hair while observing her reflection in a mirror placed upon a black lacquer box. A second figure sits nearby, observing the scene. In the upper left corner, a circular inset depicts the poet Ōtomo no Kuronushi, one of the original Six Immortal Poets of the Heian period. Eishi reinterprets these classical figures through the lens of contemporary Edo fashion, a common practice in ukiyo-e print culture. The print demonstrates the artist's mastery of line and his ability to balance negative space with detailed textile patterns.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on subtle tones of black, grey, and soft peach. This choice directs attention to the posture of the figures and the delicate rendering of their kimono. The inclusion of calligraphy and the artist's seal provides context for the print's production within the competitive publishing environment of Edo. Eishi's approach to the human form, characterised by grace and a sense of detachment, offers a distinct perspective on the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on images of beautiful women. This print serves as an example of the sophisticated graphic design prevalent in late eighteenth-century Japan, where literary allusion and fashion were frequently combined to appeal to a literate urban audience.
