This woodblock print is part of the Hoeido Tokaido series, which documents the journey along the road connecting Edo and Kyoto. Hiroshige depicts the post station of Kusatsu, known for its local speciality, uba-ga-mochi (rice cakes). The composition is divided into two distinct zones. The upper section shows the interior of a busy teahouse, where travellers rest and consume refreshments. The lower section captures the kinetic energy of the road, featuring a group of porters carrying a palanquin.

Hiroshige employs a clear, narrative style that balances architectural precision with human activity. The teahouse is rendered with clean lines, showing the open-air structure typical of such establishments. The figures in the foreground are drawn with a focus on movement, their strained postures conveying the physical demands of their work. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft blues, earthy tones, and the muted green of the palanquin to create a sense of historical atmosphere.

Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on theatrical subjects, Hiroshige prioritised the observation of daily life and the specific character of each station.
