This woodblock print originates from the Kyōka gayū shū, an anthology of kyōka poetry. Kyōka, or mad verse, is a form of thirty-one-syllable Japanese poetry that employs wit, parody, and wordplay. Totoya Hokkei, a student of Katsushika Hokusai, produced this work in the surimono style. Surimono were privately commissioned prints, often distributed among members of poetry circles to commemorate special occasions or seasonal gatherings.
The composition presents two distinct scenes across a double-page spread. On the left, a figure works over a large fish, while the right side depicts a woman engaged in a domestic or artisanal task, surrounded by tools and scrolls. The inclusion of calligraphy is central to the piece, as the text and image function in tandem to convey the specific theme of the anthology. Hokkei uses a refined line quality, typical of the surimono tradition, which prioritises high-quality paper and subtle colour application over the mass-produced aesthetic of standard commercial prints.
As a practitioner of the Ukiyo-e school, Hokkei demonstrates a mastery of balance and negative space. The figures are rendered with a focus on gesture and posture, reflecting the everyday activities that often served as subjects for these poetic collections. The muted palette, dominated by soft ochre, indigo, and cream tones, aligns with the understated elegance expected by the sophisticated patrons who commissioned such works. This print offers a glimpse into the cultural life of the Edo period, where literature and visual art were closely linked through the activities of amateur poetry clubs. The work remains a fine example of the technical precision achieved by nineteenth-century Japanese printmakers, particularly in the delicate registration of colour blocks and the integration of text within the pictorial frame.
