A woodblock print from Kawanabe Kyōsai’s series depicting supernatural yōkai figures in a dynamic and humorous confrontation.
Kawanabe Kyōsai was a master of the late Edo and early Meiji periods, known for his technical skill and his penchant for the macabre and the satirical. This print originates from his celebrated series, Kyōsai hyakki gadan, or Pictures of One Hundred Demons. The work depicts a collection of yōkai, the supernatural creatures of Japanese folklore, engaged in a dynamic and somewhat absurd confrontation.
Kyōsai employs a clean, graphic style that balances the grotesque with a sense of playfulness. The figures are rendered with precise, fluid lines, characteristic of his training in both the Kanō school and his independent study of ukiyo-e. One creature, draped in a cloak patterned with maple leaves, faces off against a pink, furred entity wielding a long staff. A third figure, wearing a distinctive black cap, rides atop a beast that resembles a wild boar. The composition is set against a neutral, paper-toned background, allowing the muted colours of the figures to occupy the space without distraction.
This series demonstrates Kyōsai's ability to synthesise traditional themes with his own imaginative flair. He often used these supernatural subjects to comment on the social and political climate of his time, using the chaos of the spirit world to mirror the rapid changes occurring in Japan during the late nineteenth century. The print is a fine example of the woodblock medium, showing the careful registration of colour blocks and the expressive potential of the line. It captures the artist's unique perspective on the intersection of myth, humour, and artistic tradition, offering a glimpse into the creative mind of one of Japan's most unconventional painters.
