A woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige II depicting the traditional practice of seeking evening cool on the Kamo River in Kyoto.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige II is part of the series titled A Hundred Views of Famous Places in the Various Provinces. The composition captures the atmosphere of a summer evening along the Kamo River in Kyoto. The scene depicts the tradition of yusuzumi, or seeking relief from the heat of the day by gathering on temporary platforms erected over the shallow riverbed.
In the foreground, figures are seated on green mats, enjoying food and conversation. The artist employs a clear division of space, separating the intimate social gathering on the platforms from the broader view of the riverbank. Across the water, the bustling activity of the Shijo district is visible, with numerous stalls and visitors illuminated by lanterns. The background features the dark, looming silhouette of mountains under a twilight sky, which provides a sense of scale and quietude against the activity below.
Utagawa Hiroshige II, a student of the master Utagawa Hiroshige, maintained the stylistic conventions of the Ukiyo-e school while applying his own approach to colour and atmospheric perspective. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in the woodblock printing process, particularly in the gradation of the sky and the water. The use of blue tones creates a cooling effect, appropriate for the subject matter of escaping the summer heat. This work offers a glimpse into the social customs of mid-nineteenth-century Japan, documenting the intersection of urban life and the natural environment. The print is a fine example of the genre, reflecting the period's interest in travel, regional identity, and the depiction of daily life in major cities.
