A monochromatic lithograph by Dutch artist Jo Bezaan, depicting cattle in the Camargue region with a focus on silhouette and form.
Jo Bezaan, a Dutch artist active during the early twentieth century, produced this lithograph depicting cattle within the marshy plains of the Camargue region in southern France. The composition features four animals arranged across the foreground, their forms rendered with a focus on volume and silhouette rather than anatomical precision. Bezaan employs a monochromatic palette to define the figures against the undulating terrain, using varying densities of ink to suggest shadow and texture on the hides of the cattle.
The background is simplified, consisting of rolling hills and a stark, circular sun or moon that provides a sense of atmosphere. The artist uses a rhythmic approach to the placement of the animals, creating a balance between the standing and grazing figures. This work reflects the interest in regional subjects and rural life that occupied many European printmakers of the period. The technique relies on the expressive potential of the lithographic stone, allowing for soft transitions between light and dark areas, which contributes to the quiet, observational quality of the scene.
Bezaan demonstrates a clear interest in the relationship between the animals and their environment. The lines are deliberate, avoiding unnecessary detail to maintain a focus on the overall form and movement of the herd. This print offers a view into the artist's graphic style, which prioritises clarity and structural integrity. The work remains an example of early twentieth-century Dutch printmaking, capturing a specific geographical subject through a lens of simplified, modern representation. It is a study of form and light, presented with the technical restraint characteristic of Bezaan's graphic output.
