A detailed 1839 lithograph by Thomas Shotter Boys depicting the Chapelle de l'Institut in Paris, rendered with delicate watercolour washes.
Thomas Shotter Boys was a British artist who spent significant time in Paris, where he trained under Richard Parkes Bonington. This work is a plate from his celebrated 1839 publication, 'Picturesque Architecture in Paris, Ghent, Antwerp, Rouen, etc.' The lithograph captures the dome and facade of the Chapelle de l'Institut de France, a structure originally commissioned by Cardinal Mazarin.
Boys utilised a sophisticated combination of lithography and hand-applied watercolour to achieve his atmospheric effects. The composition relies on a low-angle perspective, which emphasises the scale of the classical architecture against the expansive, pale sky. The artist balances the monumental stone forms of the chapel with the everyday activity of Parisians in the foreground. Figures are rendered with delicate brushwork, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the urban environment.
The muted palette, dominated by ochre, grey, and soft brown tones, reflects the aesthetic preferences of the period for topographical accuracy combined with a romantic sensibility. Boys was known for his technical precision, particularly in his rendering of architectural details such as the Corinthian columns and the curvature of the dome. His work provides a visual record of the city before the extensive urban renovations undertaken by Baron Haussmann in the mid-nineteenth century. This print offers a glimpse into the architectural character of Paris during the July Monarchy, capturing the interplay between light and shadow on the limestone surfaces of the capital. The work remains a primary reference for those interested in nineteenth-century urban topography and the history of lithographic printing techniques.
