A striking figurative work by Alison Saar, depicting a figure with bottles emerging from their head, exploring themes of healing and cultural identity.
Alison Saar, born in 1956, is an American artist whose practice engages with the complexities of identity, history, and the body. In 'La Curandera', Saar presents a figure whose head transforms into a series of branching forms, each terminating in a glass bottle. This imagery draws upon traditions of folk medicine and spiritual healing, where the curandera acts as a vessel for knowledge and remedy. The figure is rendered in a deep, saturated red, contrasting against a muted, textured grey background. The application of paint suggests a tactile, almost sculptural quality, consistent with Saar's broader work in wood carving and assemblage.
The composition is stark and direct. The figure faces the viewer with an expression of stillness, while the bottles rising from the head suggest a connection to the ethereal or the medicinal. Saar often incorporates found materials and references to African diasporic culture, and here, the use of the bottle motif evokes historical practices of spirit containment and ritual. The rough edges of the paper support, visible in the print, maintain the raw, handmade quality of the original work. By focusing on the figure as a conduit for healing, Saar invites reflection on the role of the individual within cultural and ancestral frameworks. The work avoids unnecessary ornamentation, allowing the symbolic weight of the red figure and the bottles to occupy the visual space. This print captures the essence of Saar's approach, where the physical form serves as a site for memory and cultural transmission.
