A modernist composition by Le Corbusier, featuring a woman, a cat, and a teapot rendered in simplified, geometric forms.
Le Corbusier, primarily known for his architectural contributions, maintained a rigorous practice in painting throughout his career. This work, titled La dame au chat et à la théière, reflects his engagement with the principles of Purism. The composition prioritises geometric clarity and the reduction of forms to their essential components. By stripping away extraneous detail, the artist focuses on the relationship between the human figure, the feline companion, and the domestic object.
The painting employs a restricted palette, utilising muted tones that create a sense of balance across the canvas. The forms are rounded and simplified, suggesting a sculptural quality that mirrors the artist's interest in volume and space. The figure of the woman is integrated into the domestic setting, with the cat and the teapot acting as formal elements that anchor the composition. The spatial arrangement is deliberately flattened, rejecting traditional perspective in favour of a structured, almost architectural organisation of the picture plane.
Le Corbusier viewed painting as a laboratory for his architectural ideas. The interplay of light and shadow here is controlled, providing a sense of depth without relying on realistic modelling. The work demonstrates his interest in the synthesis of the arts, where the domestic environment is treated with the same analytical rigour as a building design. The repetition of curved lines throughout the piece creates a rhythmic visual experience, guiding the eye across the canvas. This piece offers an insight into the artist's private creative process, where the domestic sphere is transformed into a series of balanced, geometric relationships. It remains a clear example of his mid-century aesthetic, where the functional and the artistic merge into a unified visual language.
