An etching by Bartolomeo Pinelli depicting a family engaged in a grim, domestic task, capturing the social realities of early nineteenth-century Roman life.
Bartolomeo Pinelli was a prolific Roman engraver, painter, and illustrator known for his documentation of the daily lives of the Italian populace. This etching, titled La Famiglia dei Pedochiosi, captures a scene of domestic hardship with the directness characteristic of his work. The composition depicts a family group engaged in the mundane, yet grim, task of delousing one another. Pinelli employs a clear, linear style, using hatching and cross-hatching to define form and shadow without the need for complex tonal washes.
The figures are arranged in a tight, pyramidal structure. A woman stands behind another, tending to her hair, while a man rests his head upon the lap of the seated woman. To the right, a youth sits with a dog, mirroring the posture of the others. A small child stands to the left, playing with a simple toy. The setting is minimal, suggesting a humble, perhaps impoverished, interior or outdoor space. The title carries a double meaning in Italian, as the term 'pedochiosi' refers to those afflicted with lice, while also serving as a colloquialism for the stingy or miserly.
Pinelli often focused on the Roman working class, bandits, and street life, moving away from the idealised subjects common in the academic art of his time. His work provides a window into the social realities of early nineteenth-century Italy. The etching technique here is precise, with the artist using varied line weights to create a sense of volume and texture in the clothing and hair. By focusing on such a raw, human moment, Pinelli avoids sentimentality, presenting the scene with a detached, observational quality that remains a hallmark of his graphic output.
