A portrait of a young girl by American artist Robert Henri, painted in 1910 with fluid brushwork and dramatic lighting.
Robert Henri, a central figure in the Ashcan School, painted La Madrileñita in 1910 during one of his frequent travels to Spain. This portrait captures a young girl from Madrid, rendered with the direct, fluid brushwork that defined Henri's mature style. He favoured a method of painting that prioritised the immediate impression of the subject, often working with a limited palette to achieve a sense of spontaneity and psychological presence.
The subject is positioned against a dark, indistinct background, which forces the viewer to focus entirely on her features and the soft light illuminating her face. Henri uses broad, confident strokes to define the folds of her peach-coloured garment and the delicate ribbon in her hair. The contrast between the deep, shadowy void of the background and the luminous skin tones is a hallmark of his technique, influenced by his study of Spanish masters such as Velázquez and Goya.
Unlike the more rigid academic portraiture of his era, Henri sought to capture the character of his sitters through a more gestural approach. He often selected models from diverse backgrounds, finding beauty in the everyday person. In this work, the girl's steady gaze and the subtle tilt of her head suggest a quiet dignity. The painting remains a clear example of Henri's ability to balance technical economy with emotional resonance, avoiding unnecessary detail to maintain the integrity of the initial observation. This fine art print reproduces the texture and tonal depth of the original oil painting, preserving the artist's characteristic handling of light and shadow.
