A satirical lithograph from Daumier's 'Histoire Ancienne' series, depicting the myth of Sappho with a characteristic blend of drama and irony.
This lithograph is part of the 'Histoire Ancienne' series, a collection of fifty prints published in the French periodical Le Charivari between 1841 and 1843. In this work, Honoré-Victorin Daumier applies his characteristic satirical lens to classical mythology. The print depicts the poet Sappho at the moment of her legendary leap from the Leucadian cliff, yet the scene is subverted by the presence of a mischievous, almost grotesque Cupid figure clinging to her waist.
Daumier uses expressive, fluid line work to capture the dramatic tension of the figures against the stark, barren rock. The composition is typical of his graphic output, focusing on the psychological absurdity of the situation rather than a heroic interpretation of the myth. The inclusion of the original caption at the base of the print provides a moralising, albeit ironic, commentary on the dangers of love, a common theme in his critiques of contemporary society and classical tropes.
As a master of the lithographic medium, Daumier utilised the stone to achieve a range of tonal qualities, from the delicate hatching on the cliff face to the bold, dark outlines of the figures. This print offers a glimpse into the nineteenth-century French appetite for political and social satire, where ancient history was frequently repurposed to mock the pretensions of the era. The work remains a fine example of Daumier's ability to blend caricature with classical subject matter, resulting in an image that is both humorous and technically accomplished.
