A refined 1833 lithograph by Pierre Louis Henri Grévedon depicting a young woman in peaceful slumber, rendered with delicate line work and soft tonal shading.
Pierre Louis Henri Grévedon was a French painter and lithographer who gained popularity in the early nineteenth century for his refined portraiture. This lithograph, titled La Nuit (Le Sommeil), demonstrates his technical proficiency in the medium, which was then a relatively new method for reproducing artistic images. The work depicts a young woman in a state of repose, her head resting against large, soft pillows. She wears a delicate, ruffled cap that frames her face, while her posture suggests a quiet, undisturbed slumber.
Grévedon employs a subtle range of grey tones to model the figure and the surrounding fabric. The artist uses fine, controlled lines to define the textures of the lace and the smooth skin of the subject. The composition is centred, focusing the viewer's attention on the serene expression of the woman. The background remains largely empty, which directs the eye toward the central figure and the soft contours of the pillows.
Lithography allowed artists like Grévedon to reach a wider audience, as these prints were often produced in editions for collectors and admirers of contemporary art. This piece reflects the aesthetic preferences of the period, which often favoured sentimental or allegorical subjects rendered with a high degree of finish. The print includes the original publication details at the bottom, indicating its distribution in Paris and London during the 1830s. It remains a representative example of the commercial lithographic output of the era, capturing a moment of stillness with precision and grace.
