Jacob Gole
A satirical mezzotint by Jacob Gole depicting a nun, part of a series critiquing the French clergy during the reign of Louis XIV.
This mezzotint by the Dutch engraver Jacob Gole forms part of a series titled Karikaturen op de Franse geestelijkheid onder Lodewijk XIV. The work depicts a nun, identified by the label La Reverende Mere, with exaggerated facial features that lean into the grotesque. Gole, who was active in Amsterdam, utilised the mezzotint technique to achieve soft gradations of tone, allowing for the subtle modelling of the subject's face and the folds of her habit. The print functions as a political and social satire. Below the circular portrait, the text reads La Religieuse, followed by a verse in French. The poem suggests a cynical view of the clergy, implying that the nun seeks influence through her association with a cardinal. Such prints were common in the late seventeenth century, circulating as commentary on the perceived corruption within the French ecclesiastical hierarchy during the reign of Louis XIV. Gole was known for his technical skill in mezzotint, a medium that allowed for a painterly quality in printmaking. By using a rocker to create a burr on the copper plate, he could produce deep blacks and delicate greys. This specific print captures the biting wit of the era, where visual caricature served as a vehicle for public criticism. The composition is contained within a circular frame, a common format for portraiture of the period, which draws the viewer's attention to the subject's expression. The work remains a document of the period's social tensions and the use of print media to disseminate critical perspectives on institutional power.
