A portrait of a female tinker from Whistler's 1858 French Set, showcasing his early mastery of etching and cross-hatched shadow.
La Rétameuse is a plate from the series Twelve Etchings from Nature, often referred to as the French Set. Published in 1858, this collection represents an early stage in the career of James McNeill Whistler. The work depicts a woman engaged in the trade of a tinker, or rétameuse, seated in a quiet, contemplative posture. Whistler employs a direct approach to his subject, focusing on the textures of her clothing and the weight of her expression.
The etching demonstrates the artist's early mastery of line and shadow. He uses dense, cross-hatched marks to build volume and define the space around the figure, creating a sense of depth without relying on elaborate backgrounds. The contrast between the light areas of the woman's apron and the dark, scribbled shadows behind her provides a clear visual structure. This technique allows the viewer to focus on the character of the sitter, whose gaze is directed toward the observer with a sense of weary familiarity.
Whistler printed these works with the assistance of Auguste Delâtre in Paris, whose influence on the quality of the ink and paper choice is evident in the final result. The plate shows the artist's interest in the everyday lives of working people, a subject common among his contemporaries in the Realist movement. By capturing this specific moment, Whistler avoids idealisation, choosing instead to present a grounded, honest observation of his subject. The print remains a fine example of nineteenth-century etching techniques, showing how minimal marks can convey significant physical presence and atmosphere. It is a study in economy of form, where every line serves a purpose in defining the figure against the stark white of the paper.
