A precise 1927 watercolour by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, capturing the architectural geometry and water reflections of the French coastal town, Port Vendres.
During the final years of his life, Charles Rennie Mackintosh moved to the south of France, where he produced a series of watercolours depicting the coastal town of Port Vendres. This work, dated 1927, captures the architectural character of the town with the precision expected of a trained architect. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the solid, geometric forms of the buildings above and their rhythmic, distorted reflections in the water below.
Mackintosh employs a controlled palette of ochre, grey, and muted terracotta to define the structures. The buildings are rendered with clean lines, emphasising their mass and the way light falls across their facades. The lower half of the image is dominated by the water, where the vertical lines of the architecture are broken into a series of repeating, undulating patterns. This technique creates a sense of movement that contrasts with the stillness of the town itself.
Unlike his earlier decorative work associated with the Glasgow School, these late watercolours show a shift toward a more direct observation of the physical world. Mackintosh focuses on the interplay between man-made structures and the natural environment. The absence of human figures allows the viewer to focus entirely on the geometry of the harbour and the atmospheric quality of the Mediterranean light. This piece demonstrates his ability to translate architectural principles into a two-dimensional medium, using colour and line to create a balanced, structured view of the French coast.
