A watercolour by Charles Robert Mackintosh, 'La Rue du Soleil, Port Vendres' (1927) depicts the reflections of buildings in the water, rendered in muted tones and distorted by the water's surface.
This watercolour by Charles Robert Mackintosh (1868-1928), titled 'La Rue du Soleil, Port Vendres', dates to 1927, a year before his death. Mackintosh, a Scottish architect, designer, and artist, is associated with the Art Nouveau movement and, more specifically, with the Glasgow Style. Though best known for his architectural designs, he produced a substantial body of graphic and watercolour work, especially later in his life. This work depicts the French coastal town of Port Vendres, focusing on the reflections of buildings in the water. The composition is divided horizontally, with the upper portion showing the town's architecture and the lower portion showing its reflection. The buildings are rendered in muted tones of white, grey, and brown, with touches of red tile roofs. The reflections are depicted as vertical bands of colour, distorted by the water's surface, creating an abstract pattern. The overall effect is one of stillness and quiet observation, capturing the light and atmosphere of the Mediterranean coast.
