A classic lithograph by Théophile Alexandre Steinlen depicting figures on a Parisian street, capturing the social atmosphere of the late nineteenth century.
Théophile Alexandre Steinlen was a keen observer of Parisian life, particularly the experiences of the working class. In this lithograph, titled La Rue, he captures a moment of urban interaction. The composition features two women, one carrying a child, positioned in the foreground. They are depicted with a sense of naturalism that avoids idealisation. A man stands partially obscured behind them, his presence adding to the narrative of a busy street scene. The background is rendered with lighter, sketch-like lines, which keeps the focus on the figures. Steinlen utilised the lithographic medium to great effect, employing clear outlines and flat areas of colour that were characteristic of the period. His work often appeared in journals and as posters, making his art accessible to a wide audience. The clothing details, such as the polka-dot blouse and the checked apron, provide a sense of period authenticity. The printing credit for Charles Verneau, located at the bottom, indicates the commercial nature of the original production, which was common for artists of the Belle Époque who sought to bring art into the public sphere. This print reflects the artist's interest in the daily routines of ordinary people. By choosing to depict these figures in a candid manner, Steinlen provides a glimpse into the social fabric of late nineteenth-century Paris. The work is a fine example of his ability to combine technical skill with a sympathetic eye for his subjects. It remains a representative piece of his graphic output, demonstrating the stylistic qualities that defined his contribution to the visual culture of the era.
