A Neoclassical study of the allegorical figure of Wisdom, rendered in graphite and wash by Alexandre-Evariste Fragonard.
Alexandre-Evariste Fragonard, son of the celebrated Jean-Honore Fragonard, developed a distinct artistic identity rooted in the rigour of Neoclassicism. This work, titled La Sagesse, presents a seated female figure embodying the virtue of Wisdom. The composition draws heavily upon the visual language of antiquity, utilising a balanced, frontal posture that recalls the monumental statuary of the Greco-Roman tradition. The figure is draped in heavy, classical robes, with her right hand raised in a gesture of instruction or contemplation, while her left hand holds a wreath of stars.
The artist employs a monochromatic palette of graphite and wash to create a sculptural effect. The stark contrast between the figure and the dark background mimics the appearance of a relief carving or a study for a larger public monument. The base upon which the figure sits is decorated with smaller, secondary allegorical reliefs, which provide a sense of scale and architectural context. The headband worn by the figure is inscribed with the word 'Sagesse', ensuring the allegorical intent remains clear to the viewer.
Fragonard’s technical precision is evident in the rendering of the fabric folds and the subtle shading that defines the anatomy. This drawing functions as a study of form and symbolic representation, typical of the academic training prevalent in early nineteenth-century France. The work avoids unnecessary ornamentation, focusing instead on the clarity of the figure and the gravity of the subject matter. It offers a window into the period's fascination with moral allegory and the revival of classical ideals in visual art. The clean lines and controlled wash application demonstrate the artist's mastery of drawing as a medium for both preparatory planning and finished artistic expression.
