A complex, allegorical drawing by Edzard Koning depicting a symbolic interpretation of the Last Judgement in graphite and watercolour.
This work by the Dutch artist Edzard Koning presents a complex, allegorical interpretation of the Last Judgement. Executed in graphite with subtle watercolour washes, the composition is dense with symbolic imagery. A central sword, positioned vertically, acts as a pivot for the narrative, separating figures and thematic elements. The scene incorporates a mix of traditional religious iconography and more personal, enigmatic motifs typical of the Symbolist period.
In the foreground, a skeletal figure rests beneath a small brick arch, grounding the composition in themes of mortality. To the right, a central male figure stands amidst a garden setting, accompanied by floral elements such as roses and tulips. The background features a cityscape, suggesting a bridge between the spiritual event and the mundane world. Koning employs a calligraphic line quality, where the graphite marks create a web of texture that defines the forms without relying on heavy shading. The colour palette remains muted, with soft blues, ochres, and earthy tones providing a sense of atmospheric depth rather than high-contrast realism.
Koning, active during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, often explored themes that moved beyond literal representation. This drawing functions as a meditation on the end of days, blending the apocalyptic with the pastoral. The layering of lines creates a sense of agitation, reflecting the psychological weight of the subject matter. The work provides an insight into the artist's process, where the initial sketch remains visible beneath the applied colour, allowing the viewer to trace the development of the forms. It is a piece that rewards close inspection, as the various figures and symbols interact within a tightly packed, ornamental space.
