A refined Rococo interpretation of the biblical narrative of Laban and Rachel, rendered with soft, atmospheric brushwork and a muted palette.
Augustin de Saint-Aubin, a member of a prolific family of French engravers and draughtsmen, is primarily recognised for his meticulous prints documenting the social life of the eighteenth-century Parisian elite. This oil painting, however, offers a glimpse into his broader artistic practice, which included history painting and biblical narratives. The work depicts the Old Testament scene from Genesis where Laban searches the tents of Jacob for his household idols, which Rachel has concealed beneath her saddle.
The composition is characteristic of the Rococo period, favouring a soft, atmospheric quality over rigid linear precision. Saint-Aubin employs a muted palette, relying on subtle shifts in tone to define the figures and the interior of the tent. The lighting is diffused, creating a sense of intimacy and drama as Laban stands in the centre, his gesture directing the viewer's eye toward the seated figure of Rachel. The brushwork is fluid and sketch-like, suggesting a focus on capturing the narrative tension rather than hyper-realistic detail.
Saint-Aubin's approach to this biblical subject reflects the period's interest in theatricality and human emotion. The figures are arranged in a manner that suggests a staged performance, a common trope in French art of the era. The inclusion of domestic items and the tent structure provides a sense of place, grounding the mythological event in a tangible, albeit stylised, reality. This piece demonstrates the artist's versatility beyond his well-known graphic work, showing his ability to manage complex multi-figure compositions with a light, painterly touch. The work remains an interesting example of how eighteenth-century French artists interpreted classical and religious themes through the lens of their own aesthetic sensibilities, prioritising grace and movement.
