A refined study of a sencha tea set by the master lacquer artist Shibata Zeshin, rendered in urushi lacquer on paper.
Shibata Zeshin was a master of both lacquerware and painting, often blurring the boundaries between these two disciplines. This work, from the series Lacquer Paintings of Various Subjects, demonstrates his technical precision. He utilised urushi lacquer as a painting medium on paper, a practice that allowed him to achieve a unique texture and depth. The composition features a sencha tea set, including a cylindrical bamboo container, a rustic teapot, and a small gourd-shaped vessel.
Zeshin captures the material qualities of these objects with great economy. The bamboo container displays subtle tonal shifts, while the teapot possesses a weathered, organic appearance. A delicate sprig of flora winds through the arrangement, providing a counterpoint to the solid forms of the tea implements. The artist's signature and seal are present in the lower right, confirming his authorship.
This piece reflects the aesthetic values of the sencha tea ceremony, which favoured a more informal and scholarly approach compared to the highly ritualised matcha tea ceremony. The choice of objects suggests a quiet, contemplative atmosphere. Zeshin's ability to render these items with such clarity, despite the challenging nature of lacquer as a medium, demonstrates his command over his materials. The background remains neutral, ensuring the focus stays on the interplay between the objects and the organic lines of the plant. This print preserves the original's subtle colour palette and the distinct sheen characteristic of Zeshin's lacquer work, offering a clear view of his brushwork and the deliberate placement of each element within the frame.
