This albumen print by Kusakabe Kimbei captures the interior of a mausoleum at the Zojo-ji temple complex in Shiba, Tokyo. Kimbei, a former assistant to Felice Beato and Baron Raimund von Stillfried, operated one of the most successful photographic studios in Yokohama during the late nineteenth century. His work catered to both domestic clients and the growing number of foreign travellers visiting Japan during the Meiji period.

The image focuses on a central lacquered tomb, a structure defined by its ornate craftsmanship and traditional Japanese architectural motifs. The composition is symmetrical, drawing the eye toward the central reliquary which sits atop a raised platform. The surrounding walls feature detailed carvings of birds and foliage, typical of the decorative arts found in Edo-period funerary architecture. The lighting is soft, allowing the reflective surfaces of the lacquer and the metallic elements of the altar to emerge from the shadows of the interior space.

Photographs of this era were often hand-tinted, though this particular example retains the monochromatic sepia tones characteristic of the albumen process. The print provides a record of the Zojo-ji temple, which served as the primary burial site for the Tokugawa shoguns. The temple complex suffered significant damage during the twentieth century, making such historical photographs valuable for their documentation of lost or altered architectural details. Kimbei’s technical precision is evident in the clarity of the wood carvings and the balanced framing of the tomb, which occupies the centre of the frame. The inclusion of the original plate number, 603, at the bottom right corner is a hallmark of the commercial catalogues produced by his studio for the export market.
