A refined engraving by Raphael Morghen depicting Lady Hamilton as Thalia, the Muse of comedy, based on an original painting by Angelica Kauffman.
This engraving by Raphael Morghen depicts Emma, Lady Hamilton, in the guise of Thalia, the Muse of comedy. The composition is based on an original painting by the Swiss artist Angelica Kauffman. Lady Hamilton, a figure of considerable celebrity in the late eighteenth century, is shown holding a theatrical mask, a traditional attribute of the comic muse. Her posture is relaxed, and her attire reflects the Neoclassical fashion of the period, characterised by flowing drapery and a high-waisted gown.
Morghen, a master of the burin, employs a sophisticated range of line work to translate the painterly qualities of Kauffman's original into a monochrome medium. The cross-hatching and stippling techniques create a sense of volume in the fabric and depth in the background curtain. The Latin inscription beneath the image draws a comparison between the beauty of the ancient muse and that of Lady Hamilton, a common rhetorical device in the portraiture of the era.
The print captures the intersection of celebrity culture and classical allegory. Lady Hamilton was frequently portrayed by artists of the time, often adopting various historical or mythological personas. This work demonstrates the technical precision for which Morghen was known, as he successfully renders the soft textures of the subject's hair and the heavy folds of the drapery. The print serves as a record of both the artistic conventions of the late eighteenth century and the public fascination with Lady Hamilton's persona. It remains a fine example of the reproductive printmaking tradition, where the skill of the engraver was essential in disseminating the work of prominent painters to a wider audience.
