A portrait of a woman on a balcony in Koreiz, Crimea, featuring a bright, sun-drenched coastal setting and painterly brushwork.
Nikolay Bogdanov-Belsky, a member of the Peredvizhniki movement, often turned his attention to the lives of the Russian aristocracy during the early twentieth century. This work depicts a woman seated on a balcony in Koreiz, a coastal town in Crimea known for its mild climate and proximity to the Black Sea. The composition balances the formal portraiture of the subject with the atmospheric qualities of the seaside setting.
The subject wears a white gown adorned with gold embroidery, complemented by a red shawl draped over her shoulders. Her posture is relaxed, yet she maintains a direct gaze toward the viewer. The artist employs a light-filled palette to capture the Mediterranean quality of the Crimean coast. The blue shadows cast across the balcony floor suggest a bright, sunny day, while the white balustrade creates a clear boundary between the sitter and the expansive sea beyond. To the left, a large pot of red flowers echoes the colour of the shawl, providing a visual anchor for the composition.
Bogdanov-Belsky demonstrates his technical skill through the handling of light and texture. The brushwork is loose and painterly, characteristic of his later work, which moved away from the strict realism of his earlier career. The interplay between the cool tones of the sea and the warm, saturated colours of the subject's attire creates a sense of harmony. This piece offers a glimpse into the leisure activities of the upper classes in pre-revolutionary Russia, capturing a moment of stillness against the backdrop of the Crimean landscape.
