A classic 1787 group portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds, depicting Lady Smith with her three children in a tender, painterly composition.
Painted in 1787, this group portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds depicts Charlotte Delaval, Lady Smith, alongside her three children: George Henry, Louisa, and Charlotte. Reynolds, a dominant figure in eighteenth-century British art and the first President of the Royal Academy, was known for his ability to capture the character of his sitters while employing a painterly technique influenced by the Old Masters.
In this composition, Lady Smith is shown in a large hat adorned with feathers, a fashion choice of the period. She is positioned to the left, observing her children with a gentle expression. The children are grouped closely, with the young boy held by his mother and sisters, creating a sense of familial warmth. Reynolds uses a soft, atmospheric background that suggests a park setting, typical of the grand manner portraiture he popularised. The brushwork is fluid, particularly in the rendering of the lace, the children's white dresses, and the soft textures of the clothing.
The painting demonstrates Reynolds's skill in managing complex group arrangements. He balances the figures through their interaction and gaze, ensuring the focus remains on the maternal bond. The palette is composed of muted earth tones, soft pinks, and whites, which allow the figures to emerge from the darker, shadowed background. This work is held in the collection of the National Gallery in London and remains a representative example of Reynolds's late career, where he moved away from rigid formality toward a more naturalistic and emotive style of portraiture. The work captures a specific social class and period, reflecting the aesthetic values of the British aristocracy during the late Georgian era.
