A refined nineteenth-century engraving by Davide Testi, depicting a Neoclassical bust of General Lafayette after the sculpture by Horatio Greenough.
This engraving by Davide Testi depicts a bust of the Marquis de Lafayette, based on the original marble sculpture by the American artist Horatio Greenough. The portrait captures the subject in a Neoclassical style, featuring the characteristic drapery and idealised features associated with the period. The subject is shown in a heroic, timeless manner, reflecting the aesthetic values of early nineteenth-century portraiture.
Testi employs precise line work to translate the three-dimensional qualities of Greenough's marble into a two-dimensional medium. The shading is achieved through controlled hatching, which defines the musculature of the neck and the folds of the fabric. The composition is centred, focusing entirely on the bust, which sits against a plain background. This approach directs the viewer's attention to the facial features and the stoic expression of the General.
Below the bust, the print includes a dedication to Joseph Green Cogswell, which provides historical context regarding the circulation of such portraits among the intellectual and social circles of the time. The engraving serves as a record of the original sculpture, which was commissioned during Lafayette's later years. By reproducing the work in print, Testi allowed for a wider dissemination of the image, documenting the public perception of the figure during the post-revolutionary era. The print maintains a clean, academic appearance, typical of the reproductive engraving techniques used to document fine art sculpture in the nineteenth century.
