A detailed 18th-century engraving by Simon Thomassin depicting the allegorical figure of Air, based on the marble sculpture by Philippe Magnier.
This fine etching by Simon Thomassin depicts the allegorical figure of Air, one of a series representing the four elements. The original marble sculpture was created by the French sculptor Philippe Magnier for the gardens of Versailles. Thomassin, a skilled engraver, documented these garden statues with precision, capturing the fluid drapery and the classical posture of the figure.
The composition presents a young woman standing upon a cloud, her form wrapped in light, billowing fabric that suggests movement through the sky. She holds a cluster of roses, a detail that adds a soft, natural element to the otherwise formal, neoclassical aesthetic. The engraving technique employs fine, parallel lines to model the volume of the figure and the texture of the stone, demonstrating the technical proficiency required to translate three-dimensional sculpture into a two-dimensional print medium.
As a record of the statuary at Versailles, this work offers a glimpse into the decorative programmes commissioned by Louis XIV. The figure embodies the grace and poise associated with the French Baroque style, where mythological subjects were often used to decorate royal grounds. The print retains the original inscription at the base, which identifies the subject and the sculptor of the marble original. This piece is a clear example of the collaborative relationship between sculptors and printmakers during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, where the latter ensured the wider dissemination of royal artistic achievements. The clarity of the line work and the balanced composition make this an excellent study of classical form, suitable for those interested in the history of garden sculpture and the evolution of printmaking techniques in France.
