A detailed etching by Alexandre Calame depicting the rugged beauty of the Lake of Brientz in the Swiss Alps.
Alexandre Calame, a central figure in nineteenth-century Swiss art, gained recognition for his depictions of the Alpine environment. This etching, titled Lake of Brientz, Number 99, captures the dramatic topography of the Bernese Oberland. Calame spent much of his career documenting the rugged terrain of his homeland, often focusing on the interplay between light and the imposing geological features of the mountains.
The composition employs a classic Romantic structure, using a dark, textured foreground of rocks and dense foliage to frame the distant, illuminated expanse of the lake. This contrast creates a sense of depth, drawing the viewer from the immediate, tactile details of the shoreline toward the atmospheric haze of the peaks. The etching technique allows for a high degree of precision in the rendering of the gnarled trees and the jagged mountain ridges, reflecting the artist's technical proficiency in printmaking.
Calame's work often sought to convey the raw, untamed character of the Swiss wilderness. By focusing on the specific geography of the Lake of Brientz, he provides a record of the region as it appeared during the mid-nineteenth century. The print demonstrates his ability to balance the observation of natural forms with the dramatic sensibilities characteristic of the period. The inclusion of small figures near the water provides a sense of scale, emphasising the vastness of the surrounding environment. This piece is a representative example of the graphic output that helped establish Calame's reputation across Europe, offering a window into the aesthetic priorities of the era.
