A dramatic mezzotint print from the Liber Studiorum, depicting a stormy scene at the Lake of Thun in Switzerland.
This print is a plate from the Liber Studiorum, a collection of landscape compositions initiated by J.M.W. Turner. Charles Turner, a skilled engraver, executed this work using a combination of etching and mezzotint. The technique allows for a wide range of tonal values, which is necessary to capture the dramatic atmospheric effects of the scene.
The composition depicts the Lake of Thun in Switzerland during a storm. A jagged bolt of lightning illuminates the dark, heavy clouds that hang over the mountainous terrain. The contrast between the light from the sky and the shadowed peaks creates a sense of scale and natural power. In the foreground, figures are gathered near a cart on the shore, providing a human element that contrasts with the vastness of the alpine environment. The water is rendered with choppy, agitated lines, suggesting the wind and turbulence of the weather.
Charles Turner was instrumental in the production of the Liber Studiorum, working closely with J.M.W. Turner to translate the painter's original sketches into print. The series was intended to demonstrate the variety of landscape subjects, including marine, mountainous, and pastoral scenes. This specific plate, marked with the letter M for 'Mountainous', demonstrates the technical precision required to replicate the painterly qualities of the original watercolour studies. The print captures the specific interest in the sublime that defined the Romantic period, where the raw, untamed power of nature was a frequent subject for artists. The sepia tones of the ink enhance the dramatic mood, focusing the viewer on the interplay of light and shadow across the Swiss landscape.
