A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Cornelis Cort depicting the Lamentation of Christ, showcasing the technical precision of Dutch printmaking.
This engraving by Cornelis Cort depicts the Lamentation of Christ, a subject frequently explored in European art. The composition centres on the body of Christ, positioned horizontally across the foreground, while figures including the Virgin Mary and other mourners surround him. The cross, with a ladder leaning against it, occupies the upper portion of the scene, providing a vertical anchor to the arrangement. Cort employs precise line work to define the musculature of the figures and the folds of their garments, demonstrating his technical proficiency as a printmaker.
Cort was a significant figure in the dissemination of Italian artistic styles to the North, having spent time in Rome working with Titian and other masters. His ability to translate complex painterly compositions into the medium of engraving allowed for the wider circulation of religious imagery. The figures are rendered with a sense of weight and volume, typical of the late sixteenth-century style. The background includes a subtle suggestion of a landscape, which provides context without distracting from the primary narrative of grief and mourning. The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the print reflects the scholarly and religious function of such works during the period. This specific impression bears the mark of the publisher Carlo Losi, indicating its circulation in the eighteenth century, long after the original plate was created. The work remains a clear example of the technical standards achieved by Dutch engravers who bridged the gap between the artistic traditions of the Netherlands and Italy.
