A satirical 1830 lithograph by Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet depicting a chaotic domestic scene with expressive character work.
Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet, a draughtsman and lithographer, produced this work in 1830. The print, titled L'Amour Conjugal, captures a chaotic domestic scene rendered with the expressive line work characteristic of early nineteenth-century French lithography. Raffet, a student of Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet, often focused on military subjects, yet this piece demonstrates his ability to engage with social satire and the domestic sphere.
The composition depicts a man in a state of visible distress, standing in the centre of a room while surrounded by family members and domestic clutter. A woman gestures towards him, while a child and other figures occupy the periphery. The artist employs a range of tonal values, from the deep shadows near the fireplace to the lighter areas defining the figures. The presence of a dog and various household objects adds to the sense of disorder. The work includes a handwritten approval note in the margin, dated 27 April 1830, which provides a specific temporal anchor for the print's production and censorship history during the Bourbon Restoration.
Raffet's technique relies on the fluid potential of the lithographic stone, allowing for a sketch-like quality that captures movement and emotion. The figures are animated, their postures conveying a sense of frantic energy. This print offers a glimpse into the popular visual culture of Paris in the 1830s, where lithography served as a primary medium for both political commentary and social observation. The work remains a clear example of the technical proficiency achieved by French printmakers of the period, who utilised the medium to disseminate narrative scenes to a wider public audience. The print is preserved in various institutional collections, documenting the artist's contribution to the graphic arts of the era.
