This work is the first leaf from an album of seven paintings by the Qing Dynasty artist Yuan Yao. Yuan Yao was active in Yangzhou and is recognised for his technical precision and his engagement with the styles of earlier masters. In this composition, he pays homage to the Yuan Dynasty painter Wu Chen, a member of the Four Masters of the Yuan. The scene depicts a quiet, coastal retreat with small dwellings nestled among trees and rocky outcrops.

The ink work demonstrates a controlled application of brushstrokes, balancing the solid forms of the mountains with the negative space of the water. The composition follows traditional Chinese spatial logic, where the foreground elements provide a clear entry point for the viewer, leading the eye towards the distant horizon and the subtle silhouettes of hills across the water.
