Aert van der Neer, a master of the Dutch Golden Age, wasn't always destined for artistic greatness. Born in Gorinchem in 1603, he began his career as a steward to the lords of Arkel. It wasn't until he moved to Amsterdam and befriended the artist Rafael Govertsz Camphuysen that his artistic journey truly began. Van der Neer dedicated himself to painting, specialising in nocturnal scenes and winter landscapes, developing a unique talent for capturing the subtle effects of light and atmosphere. His paintings, often depicting moonlit rivers or frozen canals, evoke a sense of tranquil beauty. Van der Neer’s skill lay in his meticulous observation and delicate brushwork, creating luminous effects that set him apart from his contemporaries. While he faced financial difficulties throughout his life, even running a wine tavern for a time, his artistic legacy has endured, influencing generations of landscape painters. Today, Aert van der Neer's works are celebrated for their poetic interpretations of the Dutch landscape.
