A serene Bunjinga-style hanging scroll by Okuhara Seiko, featuring a mountain scene rendered in ink and soft blue and green tones.
Okuhara Seiko was a prominent figure in the Meiji-period Bunjinga, or literati, tradition. This work demonstrates her command of traditional brush techniques, combining ink wash with subtle applications of blue and green pigment. The composition follows the classic structure of Chinese-influenced Japanese painting, featuring towering, craggy peaks that recede into the distance, contrasted against a foreground populated by pine trees and small figures crossing a bridge.
The artist employs a delicate line quality to define the rock formations and the texture of the foliage. The use of colour is restrained, serving to guide the eye through the scene rather than to overwhelm the viewer. The inclusion of a dwelling nestled near the water and the figures on the path introduces a human element, suggesting a narrative of retreat or travel common in the literati genre. The vertical format, typical of hanging scrolls, allows for a sense of atmospheric depth, with the mist-filled middle ground separating the foreground activity from the distant mountains.
Seiko was known for her independence and her ability to sustain a career as a professional artist during a period of significant social change in Japan. Her work often reflects a deep engagement with classical themes, yet it maintains a distinct personal touch in its execution. This print captures the quietude of the original silk painting, preserving the tonal variations and the specific character of the brushwork. It is a representative example of the late nineteenth-century Bunjinga style, which sought to maintain the aesthetic values of the scholar-painter while adapting to the changing tastes of the era.
