A traditional Japanese Bunjinga hanging scroll featuring a mountain scene rendered in the classic blue-and-green mineral pigment style.
Yanagisawa Kien, a prominent figure in the development of the Bunjinga (literati) style in Japan, produced this hanging scroll using the traditional blue-and-green technique. This method, rooted in Chinese painting traditions, relies on mineral pigments of azurite and malachite to create a specific aesthetic effect. The composition follows a vertical format, guiding the viewer from the foreground, where a small figure crosses a bridge near a stone archway, up through a dense forest of pine trees, and finally toward the distant, mist-shrouded peaks.
The painting demonstrates the artist's engagement with classical Chinese models, which were highly regarded by the Japanese literati of the Edo period. The brushwork is precise, defining the craggy rock formations and the textures of the foliage with controlled strokes. The colour palette is restrained, focusing on the interplay between the cool tones of the blue and green pigments and the warmer, aged silk ground. A significant portion of the upper section is occupied by a calligraphic inscription, a common feature in literati works that integrates poetry or personal reflection directly into the visual space of the painting.
This work reflects the intellectual pursuits of the period, where artists sought to emulate the scholarly ideals of their Chinese predecessors. The balance between the detailed foreground and the atmospheric distance creates a sense of depth, typical of the genre. The inclusion of architectural elements, such as the small pavilion nestled among the trees, provides a human scale to the vast natural environment. This print captures the subtle variations in tone and the delicate application of colour found in the original silk scroll, offering a clear view of the artist's technical approach to the blue-and-green tradition.
